ECOMMERCE
Good ecommerce starts with product data, not design
February 2026 · 5 min read
Online stores are judged on how easily a customer can find the right product. That capability is decided by the product data long before anyone chooses a colour palette.
Attributes are the store's real navigation
Size, material, compatibility, capacity, finish: these are what customers filter by. If the same attribute is spelled three different ways across the catalogue, no amount of front-end work will produce a usable filter. Cleaning the data is unglamorous and it is the single highest-return task in most ecommerce projects.
Variants and stock
Decide early whether a difference creates a variant or a separate product. Getting this wrong affects stock accuracy, reporting, shipping rules and every integration downstream. It is far cheaper to settle at the planning stage than to restructure a live catalogue.
Then design
Once the data model is settled, the design work becomes straightforward, because the category pages, filters and product templates all have a clear shape to follow.
